We worked with Anne Thorne of Anne Thorne Architects way back in 2008 on the launch of Angela Carter Close, a small, environmentally conscious development in Brixton. The building embodies many 'green' features and was ahead of the trend toward sustainably designed buildings. We were recognised as an agency that worked in the architectural field, had knowledge of the use in timber in construction, and had a healthy interest in sustainability in the built environment.
The development comprised nine terraced, timber-frame family houses with gardens curving around parking and play areas shared with council housing. On a tight backland site, the strategy was to design using natural materials around existing mature trees. ATA proposed that this new street be named after the great writer Angela Carter many of whose novels and short stories are set in this area of South London.
Our brief was to generate media interest in the building as it was a social housing project with very green credentials when it was not seen as a priority in designing new buildings. The target was architectural media and social and community housing titles.
